Nylon

Nylon

  • One of the most popular and well-known carpet fiber types, as well as one of the strongest and most durable.
  • Man-made, synthetic fiber
  • Colorfast, with great color flexibility and uniformity
  • Stain-resistant, durable, long-lasting, and resistant to mildew
  • Resilient, with the ability to quickly bounce back even after it has been flattened
  • Suitable for any room, and can be used in commercial and residential settings
  • Moderately priced, it could be more expensive than other fiber options
  • Available in Berber, frieze, patterned, and plush & textured styles
  • Can fade when exposed to too much sunlight, unless it is solution dyed nylon. (or just take the whole line out)
  • Ideal for rooms that experience heavy foot traffic from kids and pets
Polyester

Polyester

  • Also known as PET
  • Affordable and budget-friendly, yet fashionable (particularly when compared to nylon carpet or wool carpet)
  • Available in a variety of colors and textures
  • Boasts rich color clarity and colorfastness, along with a luxurious feel
  • Built-in stain resistance makes it easy to clean and maintain
  • Resistant to mildew
  • Can be made from recycled materials for eco-conscious consumers
  • Modern polyester carpet is more durable than it used to be, but may be susceptible to being crushed and worn down over time, especially if there’s a lot of foot traffic
  • Available in Berber, frieze, patterned, and plush & textured styles
Polypropylene

Polypropylene

  • Also known as Olefin
  • Appears similar to wool carpet, and commonly showcases looped styles
  • Stain-resistant, mildew-resistant, moisture-resistant, and fade-resistant  and therefore used in many indoor/outdoor applications
  • Easy to clean and suitable for areas with a lot of foot traffic
  • Features strong, vibrant color that doesn’t fade, even when exposed to bleach, sunlight, and chemicals
  • Colorfast because the fibers are solution dyed (the color is built into the fibers)
  • Typically more affordable than natural fiber options like wool, and also less expensive than polyester and nylon
  • Less durable than other synthetic fibers, so may become crushed or matted
  • Available in mostly Berber (looped) styles.
Triexta

Triexta Polyester (PTT)

  • Also known as Smartstrand, this is a newer carpet fiber
  • Long-lasting and more resilient than regular polyester fibers
  • Eco-friendly options available
  • Soft texture for comfort underfoot
  • Contains built-in stain and soil resistant technology, so spills are easy to clean because it is solution dyed
  • Fibers don’t absorb moisture
  • Colorfast, these fibers resist fading, even when exposed to sunlight
  • Priced competitively with Nylon, so great for all budgets
  • Available in Berber and patterned styles frieze and textured as well
Wool4

Wool

  • An eco-friendly fiber that’s made from natural, renewable, recyclable, and biodegradable wool
  • Comfortable and luxurious feel underfoot, and soft to the touch
  • Strong and built to last, with excellent elasticity to preserve its appearance for longer than other carpet fibers
  • Absorbs moisture, helping to control the humidity level in a room
  • Available in many colors
  • Flame resistant
  • Able to hide dirt better than synthetic carpet fibers, but less stain resistant than some synthetic fibers, so cleaning spills promptly is recommended
  • Can fade when exposed to too much sunlight, and fibers may shed
  • More expensive than other carpet fiber options
  • Available in Berber, frieze, patterned, and plush & textured styles

Denver Flooring Tip

Each of the carpet fibers available can be a wonderful addition to any Denver home.

Nylon, for example, is a great fiber for busy families who want a carpet that will be durable and easy to maintain, while polyester can be a more affordable alternative that offers similar benefits for those on a tighter budget.

Polypropylene is a great choice for active individuals who want a carpet whose color won’t fade over time, and it can be a good option for those who like wool but can’t afford it. And, speaking of wool, homeowners who want to add a luxurious element to their design scheme are sure to be impressed by this fiber, which even helps keep your indoor environment comfortable despite outside temperatures and humidity.

Finally, there’s triexta, also known as smartstrand(™), which combines many of the attractive qualities of other carpet fibers, such as durability and colorfastness. Plus, it’s an ideal flooring option for Denver homeowners who are seeking a soft texture that’s also eco-friendly.
