So you have decided to convert your basement into a new room. Whether it’s a home office, gym, home theater, family room or game room, choosing the right floor is the key.

Installing flooring in a basement can present a number of unique challenges. Water damage is one of them. Basement flooring is notorious for becoming damp. So when planning for a basement renovation, you need to choose materials that are water-resistant.

Here are a few flooring options for your basement.

Vinyl

For a more moisture-resistant basement floor, vinyl is an excellent choice. Not only is it impervious to moisture, it is also durable, maintenance-free and resistant to mold. Add to that, it comes in a wide variety of styles and colors. Vinyl installs easily over a concrete slab as long as the floor is smooth.

Ceramic tiles

Ceramic tiles come in a number of styles and colors. If you are seeking for a more finished look in your basement, then this would be a great choice for you. It also requires little maintenance and is easy to clean. If properly installed and maintained, ceramic tiles should last for several years.

Cork

Cork is a very durable material and is being used in basement and lower-level kitchen installations. It provides more comfort than a concrete floor because it’s soft and it breathes. Plus, it’s naturally resistant to bacteria and doesn’t rot. But the downside is that it scratches easily. Signs of wear and tear may also be evident over time.

Carpet

Carpet provides a bit of insulation to a room and turns your basement into a comfortable and inviting space. However, it’s not the best solution for moisture prevention. It should only be installed in a dry basement with adequate floor protection.

Linoleum

Linoleum is a popular choice for basement flooring. Years ago, linoleum floors were associated with industrial construction and drab colors. Now, linoleum floors are making a comeback with bold, rich colors.

Linoleum floors are good at repelling water. You can get it wet and you don’t have to worry about water penetration. But in order to maintain its looks, it should be maintained over time.
