Tiny house living is a growing trend for people who are looking to downsize. A smaller home provides a feeling of coziness and intimacy. Plus, it requires fewer amounts of time, effort and energy to clean and maintain. But because you have to cram all your possessions in a tiny space, your home may feel cramped, chaotic and cluttered all of a sudden.
Just because you have a small space, doesn’t mean it has to feel small. Luckily, there are some things you can do to trick the eye into perceiving more space. Make your home look bigger with the right flooring.
Use light colors
Dark colors can make a big room feel cozy and intimate. This isn’t a good idea for small spaces as it can make the room feel claustrophobic.
Light colored flooring and walls can instantly turn a compact interior into a seemingly bigger space. Light colors are more reflective and enhance the effect created by natural light; thus, making the room feel open and airy.
Use large tile
Small tiles with increased grout lines can create a floor that looks busy or fussy. Larger tiles, on the other hand, convey a sense of greater space. The fewer the grout lines, the more expansive your floor will look. Luckily, floor tiles can be found in squares and rectangles of 12, 16, 18 and 24 inches.
Use the same flooring
Multiple flooring styles serve to define spaces. However, different flooring in different rooms will chop up the visual, making the space appear smaller than it really is. Using the same flooring throughout the entire house will visually expand the space, creating the illusion of more space.
Use stripes
Vertical stripes on clothing makes you look taller. The same concept can also be applied in your living space. Stripes can make a room look more expansive. This is especially beneficial if you have a narrow room.
