Vinyl floor is a popular choice among homeowners because it looks attractive, inexpensive and has a cushioned core. It is also waterproof and easy to clean.

Of course, you want to enjoy your vinyl floor for many years. The good news is that maintaining that “like new” look is not that hard to achieve. With just a little time and elbow grease, you can be sure that your floor looks great for the years to come.

Clean regularly

Always sweep, dry mop and vacuum the floor to prevent dust and dirt from building up. Then, use a wet mop to remove more aggressive soils. Use a sponge mop and plain water when cleaning vinyl flooring, but avoid getting the floor too wet.

Water from an overly wet mop will work its way into the edges, seams or cracks. Also, avoid using a beater batter attachment when vacuuming vinyl floor as this can damage the flooring surface.

Wipe up any spills as soon as possible

Whether it’s a glass of water, orange juice, grape juice or soda, be sure to clean up spills right away. Taking immediate action will help maintain your floor’s eye-catching appearance.

Water can damage the floor when it’s left to sit for too long, and sugary drinks become difficult to clean up once they dry up. Don’t let them dry on your floor.

Use doormats

Grit and sand acts like sandpaper, removing the finish from your floor. This is one of your floor’s biggest enemies. Use doormats outside the entrance of your home to prevent grit, sand, dirt and other substances from being tracked onto your home and damaging the floor’s surface.

Prevent dents and scratches

Never drag, push or pull appliances and furniture across the floor. Lay a plywood panel when moving heavy items. It is also a good idea to place floor protectors on furniture legs to reduce indentations.
