bamboo flooring vs hardwood flooring

Most people may find it difficult, or even impossible, to tell the difference between hardwood and bamboo flooring. They share the same characteristics and have a similar look and feel. Add to that, they are both manufactured in planks of similar size and shape. But it is important to note that there are some specific characteristics that set these flooring choices apart.

In this blog post, we'll take an in-depth look at the difference between bamboo and hardwood flooring and how they measure up against one another. Take these differences into account when deciding between bamboo and hardwood flooring.

Hardness and durability

The durability of a flooring material is often measured through the Janka Hardness Scale.

Hardwood floor has a Janka hardness rating of about 1,300 to 1,800; while traditional bamboo has about 1,380. If you are to look at this rating, it is safe to say that the hardness of traditional bamboo may be comparable to that of hardwood flooring. However, bamboo flooring has much harder strands, with a Janka rating of about 3,000; thus, making it harder than most hardwoods. It also resists dents and scratches better than some hardwoods.

Life span

Hardwood flooring has a lifespan of 75 years. Take good care of it and it is more likely to survive up to 100 years. Meanwhile, bamboo floor has a lifespan of 10 to 25 years. When properly maintained, it can last up to 30 to 50 years.

Cost comparison

In terms of price, bamboo ranges from about $2-7 per square foot. Hardwood floors, on the other hand, costs $3 to as much as $15 per square foot. If you want the visual appeal of wood at a lower price point, bamboo is your best bet.

Care and maintenance

Both bamboo and hardwood flooring can incur damage when exposed to moisture. Because of that, these flooring options should not be used in the kitchen, bathroom and utility rooms. The best way to maintain either type of floor is through regular sweeping and damp mopping.

Hardwood floors can be refinished and sanded over and over again. Refinishing is not advised for bamboo floors, mainly because it's not wood, it's a grass.
