engineered hardwood vs solid hardwood floors

Nothing beats the beauty of hardwood flooring when it comes to adding warmth and elegance to a room. It's not surprising why hardwood floors continue to be one of the most preferred flooring material in the market.

If your heart is set on hardwood flooring, you can choose between engineered and solid hardwood floors. While these two types of flooring are often mentioned in the same breath, they are two entirely different flooring materials. It is important to learn the differences between the two before you decide your flooring installation.

Solid Hardwood Flooring

Solid hardwood is made from a single piece of wood that is about an inch thick. It is slightly more expensive than engineered hardwood, but if you have the budget then you may want to stick with solid hardwood. Solid hardwood flooring is durable material that will last a lifetime.

Since solid hardwood is a 100% natural product, it is considered as an eco-friendly choice. But one of the biggest downsides is that it reacts to changes in humidity. Solid hardwood expands when there's more moisture in the air and contracts in the winter when the air is drier. To prevent shrinking and warping, it is important to keep the humidity level in your home to 45-55% all throughout the year.

Engineered Hardwood Flooring

Engineered hardwood is also considered a natural hardwood flooring material. But the difference is that engineered hardwood flooring is made up of several thin layers of wood that is glued together, and then topped with wood veneer. In some cases, the top layer is made of real wood; thus, making it difficult, if not impossible, to tell them apart. The look and feel of engineered and solid hardwood is virtually the same.

Unlike solid hardwood, engineered hardwood is more resistant to heat and moisture. It is a suitable choice when solid wood is not. It can be installed in any room in your house, even in the basement.
